About the Photographer
William Meyer was born and raised
in St. Louis, Missouri. He moved to San Francisco in
1960 and began a career in the engineering field. Having
always had an interest in art and graphic design, it
was in 1980 that he began taking a few basic courses
in photography and printing. He found
that working with the camera provided an exciting and stimulating
diversion from his then 20-year engineering career.
For the most part, Bill is self-taught, learning his craft
through his constant involvement and perfecting his vision
through trial and error. His love for the natural world
and his dedication to the art form show in his work. He
has an understanding of lighting and composition that results
in images that are strong, yet simple and clean. The many
years of practicing his craft has produced a body of work
that is both vast and diverse.
Bill worked exclusively in the 35mm format. His first
camera was a Nikon F2A and he continued using that model
throughout his active photography. Printing from 35mm negatives
required Bill to be a perfectionist in the darkroom. Some
of his early influences included Brett Weston, Bruce Barnbaum
and Huntington Witherill.
Bill currently resides in the historic
river town of Louisiana, Missouri, a growing artist community.
His studio is located in a renovated industrial building
overlooking the Mississippi River. A recent serious accident
has prevented Bill from continuing his outdoor photography
and darkroom work, and he is unable to respond to original
photograph orders.
He has also self-published a line of unique
greeting cards showcasing his Angel series
and is currently working
toward doing digital still life photography in his studio.
